I think this is a great blog that reports on a nice range of West Virginian topics. You write about serious topics like mountain top removal and lighter things like beer pong and ramps. I love to see writing linking food to location and culture!
One of the strongest things about your blog is your voice. You rarely shy away from expressing an opinion, which I think makes you a trustworthy source for people who care about the issues you’re writing about. I see this in your latest post about mining and painkillers. Because you often link to several sources in one post, you come across as informed and maintain your credibility.
I liked that post as well as the one about ramps. Great combination of recipe ideas, culture and environmentalism. And the post with the link to find out how you’re connected to mountain top removal is very effective. It relates to your topic, obviously, and is interactive and informative in the best way that internet journalism can be. Definitely gets people who don’t think they have anything to do with West Virginia engaged.
The site is pretty usable and it seems like your categories are fairly comprehensive. I might show less posts per page to reduce scrolling. Your links work and seem useful. You could try more of the scannability techniques. The post where you looked at the website and wrote your pros and cons worked well.
One thing I’d like to see more of is voices from West Virginians. You do this a bit, but I’d love to see some interviews or some profiles of people who live and work there. And maybe some more recipes!
